Why I Clean My Produce with Kangen Water.

One of the many pH levels of waters produced from a Kangen machine is that of a 2.5 pH, which is a strong acidic water. This water is excellent at killing pesticides and microbes, making it the best and most efficient produce soak, as it helps eliminate any harmful bacteria that might be lingering on your produce, things that you don’t want you or your family ingesting. This 2.5 pH water is safe to ingest, but it does its job in combating common food-born bacteria and microbes. The bonus for me is that I don’t have to use a vinegar and baking soda mixture that lingers in my fruit and vegetables, and often alters the taste and texture long after the soak and rinse have been completed.

Following about a 3 to 5-minute bath in the 2.5 pH water comes a bath in the opposite—11.5 pH strong alkaline water. This water is effective in eliminating oil-based pesticides that are commonly used on fruits and vegetables, especially things like tomatoes and apples. Have you ever noticed that waxy coating on some of your produce? That’s often the result of strong oil-based pesticides used to keep bugs and other pests away from your produce so farmers can collect more from each harvest.

The 11.5 pH water gently removes oil-based pesticides without harsh chemicals when produce is soaked in a bath for about 2 to 3 minutes. This is also great for foods like leafy greens and romaine lettuces that often come “pre-washed” or “triple rinsed.” You’ll come to notice that even these foods produce residues when soaked in baths of 2.5 and 11.5 pH waters, often because simply rinsing them in tap water just isn’t enough.

Worldwide agricultural use of pesticides steadily increased from 1990 to 2022, reaching 3.69 million metric tons in 2022. The health effects of pesticides depend on the type of pesticide. Some, such as the organophosphates—which are chemical compounds that cause nerve damage, respiratory failure and death if not treated quickly with atropine and pralidoxime—and carbamates—which are a broad class of chemicals with a wide range of applications, from pest control to pharmaceuticals and beyond—affect the nervous system. Others may irritate the skin or eyes. Some pesticides may be carcinogens that can be cancer-causing. Others may affect the hormone or endocrine system in the body, wreaking havoc for years.

There are not many things within our control, but one of the things we can control is what foods we put into our bodies, and how we clean and prepare those foods is of utmost importance. Utilizing the best water and the most efficient methods to clean my produce has given me the peace of mind that I am doing my very best to help protect myself and my family to my best ability.
