Maintaining the ORP of Your Water.
Oxitation-reduction potential (ORP) measures the potential antioxidant properties that a substance has. Antioxidants reduce the rate of oxidative damage done on the body, which can cause oxidative disease (chronic illnesses) and accelerate the aging process.
The ORP of Kangen water provides more anti-oxidative benefits than even blueberries and green tea, which are touted by health professionals across the world as being some of the best foods to reduce oxidative stress within the body. The ORP of these foods ranges from roughly -50 to -15 on the ORP scale, whereas Kangen water has been shown to have an ORP of roughly -300 to -400 right from the faucet.
How you store your water has an effect on the ORP and pH of the water over time.
When exposed to the oxygen in the air, ionized water will hold its pH for a few hours before it loses its antioxidant effects. However, storing your water in vacuum-sealed containers can elongate it’s “shelf-life” for up to a few days. Here’s a breakdown of the best ways to store your Kangen water for optimal antioxidant potential:
The best: double-insulated vacuum stainless bottles. Because these bottles have a mechanism on the lid/cap that forces the air out when the bottle is closed, it’s best for long-term storage, up to a couple of days.
Glass mason jars affixed with a 2-piece lid are decent options for Kangen water storage. Because these jars are made for canning foods for long-term storage, they are adequate for storing Kangen water to help maintain its ORP.
Plastic bottles, even thicker bottles, are insufficient. Worse are thin-walled plastic bottles.
Using a bottle for storage and a separate bottle for drinking is optimal, if its an option for you. For example, I have a gallon-sized Hydroflask bottle that I use to store my water with the flat lid. This prevents the water from losing much of its alkalinity over time. To drink, I use a smaller 32 ounce Hydroflask with a flip lid. Because I can get through 32 ounces of water in a few hours, the alkalinity and ORP are not drastically effected.
Vacuum stainless bottles with enclosed lids show:
No loss of pH/ ORP after 3 hours, 5% loss of pH/ORP after 8 hours, 5% loss of pH/ORP after 24 hours, 5% loss of pH/ORP after 3 days
Vacuum stainless bottles with slight air-gap due to the lid show:
10% loss of pH/ORP after 3 hours, 20% loss of pH/ORP after 8 hours, 30% loss of pH/ORP after 24 hours, 40% loss of pH/ORP after 3 days
A hard plastic bottle with a flip-top lid shows:
10% loss of pH/ORP after 3 hours, 30% loss of pH/ORP after 8 hours, 40% loss of pH/ORP after 24 hours, 50% loss of pH/ORP after 3 days
A soft plastic bottle with a regular lid shows:
12% loss of pH/ORP after 3 hours, 40% loss of pH/ORP after 8 hours, 50% loss of pH/ORP after 24 hours, 65% loss of pH/ORP after 3 days
A hard plastic 2 ½ – 5 gallon container shows about:
10% loss of pH/ORP after 3 hours, 30% loss of pH/ORP after 8 hours, 40% loss of pH/ORP after 24 hours, 50% loss of pH/ORP after 3 days
A glass mason jar shows:
10% loss of pH/ORP after 3 hours, 10% loss of pH/ORP after 8 hours, 15% loss of pH/ORP after 24 hours, 20% loss of pH/ORP after 3 days
I recommend stainless bottles to anyone who drinks Kangen water, but glass mason jars are also a decent option. Because they are glass, they might be more difficult for regular use, particularly when it comes to travel convenience. If you opt to use a mason jar, make sure you have a fitted flat top and ring to ensure the best seal on your jar! My 64oz Hydroflask is my favorite for storing Kangen water when going out of the house on a trip or just keeping a little extra in the fridge on a hot summer day. I drink my water straight from my machine in glass mason jars, though when I am not immediately drinking the water, it goes into a 32oz Hydroflask that I take with me everywhere.
I definitely notice a difference in the taste quality of the water when I’ve left it sitting in a mason jar overnight and gone back to drink it. It’s almost like drinking a sparkling water after it’s gone flat, though Kangen water isn’t a sparkling water. It almost tastes as though it is losing what differentiates it from tap or bottled water.
